3. Gov. Gavin Newsom and state legislators want a cut of profits from the personal data that internet companies collect on you, the Los Angeles Times reports. “Newsom has assigned a team to work with national data scientists and legislators to create a ‘data dividend’ — a payment that businesses would make to the state or to consumers if their personal data are sold. The concept has been discussed in Silicon Valley for years as a way to tackle growing income inequality at a time when tech companies have flourished and advances in automation have eliminated jobs.” $$
4. In an effort to limit the likelihood of another season of devastating wildfires likely caused by PG&E, the utility’s plan for shutting off power during windy days is drawing concerns from some, especially those who rely on electricity to power their medical equipment, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. $$
5. What exactly is the definition of gentrification? And what do you do when the gentrifiers begin becoming gentrified by a more wealthy wave of new residents, ask Henry Grabar in Slate.
6. The Port of Oakland and the Oakland Athletics will discuss on May 13 a tentative term sheet for the Howard Terminal waterfront property that could one day include a 35,000-seat ballpark, the East Bay Citizen reports. The potential annual lease could cost the team at least $3.8 million a year for 20 years, according to the term sheet. Meanwhile, Phil Matier reports in the San Francisco Chronicle that the A’s are making plans to expand the area on the estuary for large ships.
7. The A’s may be scuffling on the field as of late, but here’s something to pick up your spirits. The San Francisco Chronicle reports the sighting of a Rickey Henderson bobblehead in publicity stills for the upcoming Pixar film “Toy Story 4.” If the character has a speaking part, expect it to refer to itself in the first person. The film opens June 21.
