Modey Lemon

The Curious City

Formed amidst that two-piece raw blues plague that spread a couple years ago, Pittsburgh’s Modey Lemon has since ingested a bass player and perhaps some other remedies, melting into a swaying psychedelic beast. On The Curious City, the kitchen sink approach resembles a post-raid meth lab, with nasty chemical residue splotched around the joint: crashing drums, weirdly catchy vocal-vaulted choruses, rolling metal bridges, ringing guitar leads, and psychotic synth sounds that take precedence as the songs fray. But while Paul Quattrone continues to be one of the most impressive rock drummers around, vocalist Phil Boyd’s talk-squawk tradeoffs and surreal yarns often still feel like an aspiring model who just heard “some weird shit” on the gaffer’s boom box during his Target commercial shoot. This record is a meth lab all right, but sometimes it feels abandoned.
