Yes, the University of California is reeling under a mountain of financial problems, and will probably have to raise student fees sometime this year. But that hasn’t stopped UC President Mark Yudof from developing a plan to provide free tuition for extremely poor California students. Although not all the details have been released, the plan, dubbed the “Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan,” will provide at least some financial aid for students whose families earn less than $60,000 a year. According to the Chron, some 1,100 students will benefit from the program, which will cost $3.1 million. The regents have to approve it, of course, but a hefty helping of kudos to Yudof, for at least trying to live up to Clark Kerr’s grand democratic plan of affordable university education for all California students.
