.Local Designer’s Career Mushrooms on Project Runway

Project Runway returned last night for its seventh season, and among the 16 contestants was some homegrown talent: Amy Sarabi of Oakland. According to a CoCo Times profile of her, Sarabi moved to Oakland at eighteen and studied at Diablo Valley College before graduating from California College of the Arts. Her senior project at CCA inspired by the underside of a mushroom (!) won her various commendations , and in 2008 she was named one of 7X7‘s “Hot 20 Under 40.” She wasn’t given a huge amount of airtime last night, but her design &#151 a black-and-white dress with an asymmetrical bodice and a light-as-air gathered skirt &#151 was utterly charming and enough to keep her in the running for next week, so it’s probably worth tuning in to see how far she’ll go.
