Oakland Councilmember Desley Brooks has a challenger in this year’s election, and she comes from the office of one of her council rivals. Shereda Nosakhare announced her candidacy today for the District 6 council seat. Nosakhare already knows her way around City Hall. She currently serves as a community advocate and policy analyst for Councilmember Libby Schaaf after stints at the district offices of Congresswoman Barbara Lee and Alameda County Supervisor’s Keith Carson.

“I have lived in Oakland and District 6 most of my life, so I speak with authority when I say that we need a change in leadership,” said Nosakhare. “We need leaders who won’t just talk about helping our city solve problems, but leaders who already have a track record of creating solutions.”
Nosakhare is the second candidate to declare an intention to run for the East Oakland District 6 seat this November. Michael Johnson, a pastor at Oakland’s Beebe Memorial Cathedral, formed a committee last September. The deadline for prospective mayoral and council candidates to file is August 8.
