Introducing The Black Aesthetic Collective’s Very First Publication

The Black Aesthetic (TBA) series has fast become a community staple for those eager to explore the Black indie film canon. Having wrapped up its second iteration just a few short months ago, the collective is already making preparations for its third season. And if waiting is not in your wheelhouse, well, keep your impatience at bay with The Black Aesthetic publication! The Black Aesthetic Season One: Black Women in Film is the 94-page companion to the series that started it all. The book’s contributors each take a moment to respond to the legacy of 20th century Black film. In his introduction, contributor Christian Johnson shares, “as I uncovered the singularly lush history of Black American cinema I grew empowered as an image maker. I no longer felt alone. There had been an aesthetic there all along.” Revelations like these will continue to be made as this publication is the first of a series of TBA books that will investigate contemporary Black cinema, African filmmakers, and queerness in Black film. The Black Aesthetic Season One: Black Women in Film is available online as well as at E.M. Wolfman.

Now on sale, $12, E.M. Wolfman’s New Life Quarterly Bookstore, 644 40th St, Oakland, TheBlkAesthetic.com.
