Farming in West Oakland

Is it possible to subsist entirely on food you grow yourself … if you live in West Oakland? Most definitely, according to journalist and biofuel station co-owner Novella Carpenter, who has been writing about her experiences on her blog, Urban Farmer. Last year, she lovingly raised a turkey chick named Harold, then eventually chopped off his head with an axe for a Thanksgiving feast. She detailed her experience for Salon. More recently, she made duck confit and rillettes. And she just completed a monthlong experiment eating solely from her farm – beets, apples, onions, cucumbers, mint, honey, kale, eggs, rabbits, etc. Penguin plans to publish Novella’s forthcoming memoir, FarmCity: The Education of an Urban Farmer.
