Who will take the crown?

SUN 6/5

As horse-racing fans accept that 2005 has failed to yield a new owner of that sport’s Triple Crown, East Bay trail runners can take comfort in the knowledge that they are just weeks away from crowning their own such winner. In the May 15 running of the Tilden Tough Ten, the second leg of the Triple Crown Trail Championship, 2003 winner Jenny Wong bested her nearest rival by more than three minutes, Holly Star set a course record for senior women, and senior Joe Schieffer outperformed the 2004 winner by more than three minutes. David Monk logged the overall fastest time, outpacing his nearest rival by almost a minute and clocking the eighth-fastest time ever recorded in the eighteen-year-old ten-miler, at 58:20. Next up in the trail series is this Sunday’s Lake Chabot Trail Challenge, the longest of the three events at 13.1 miles. It’s a scenic, mostly shaded course that encircles the beautiful reservoir and adjacent hills and boasts a studly elevation profile of more than five hundred feet. The half marathon and simultaneous 5K are also open to contestants who are not participating in the Triple Crown, and awards will be granted to the top three finishers in a variety of age groups, with one more award for the best team finish. Strait Time

Use the bridge, please

When they say it’s the Second Annual Stroll Across the Strait, they don’t mean contestants will be expected to walk on the waters of the Carquinez Strait. No miracles are required, only a $25 entry fee, $5 of which will go to the John Swett Wrestling Program. Wake up early this Saturday and report to the Nantucket Restaurant parking lot at Wanda and Port streets in Crockett, for the yearly benefit run-walk across the bee-yoo-ti-ful Al Zampa Carquinez Bridge and back — a challenging 5K looped course with scenic appeal and “one little hill.” Event organizers proclaim that “Most of the course will have little or no traffic through the event.” Oh. Better wear eye-catching clothing just in case. And while you’re at it, pray for dry weather. Start time is 9 a.m. For info and to register, phone 510-787-9811. — Kelly Vance
