You may have heard about thing called a $42 million budget deficit, but Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums has apparently decided that the crime problem is too urgent to worry about that right now. After a spate of brutal crimes, including three murders and the terrible beating of an 80-year-old woman, Dellums has agreed to let certain cops work more overtime during the surprisingly crime-heavy holiday season. According to the Trib, police overtime pay has almost doubled the amount beancounters anticipated when drafting the 2007-08 budget, but times is tough, and Dellums apparently thinks he has no choice. But what happens when the money runs out?
