Dead Hearts

No Love, No Hope

Despite the grim band name and Hot Topic-ready cover art (stylized, bloody skulls: yoinks, Scooby!), the Dead Hearts are not evidence of the dubious goth revival forecast by trendwatchers. Fortunately, they are a ripping hard-core band instead, with a mix of straight-edgy shout-along thrash and the rawky textures of bands like Electric Frankenstein. No Love, No Hope, the closest thing to a full-length the upstate NY quintet has yet released, is a seven-track plate of meaty, skillful tried-and-true. Between chunky, muted angles, balls-out roar, and nearly bluesy snatches of lead guitar, it’s all been done, but rarely with such itchy energy. By the time the infectious “Uglytown” closes out the set, you’re ready to jump in the pit and join the monotone chorus, even if you’ve never knocked yourself out in a hoodie anywhere but the gym.
