California’s community colleges are to receive $90 million less than expected from President Obama’s stimulus package, leaving the system in a deep financial hole, according to the Contra Costa Times. The state had hoped to receive $130 from the stimulus for community colleges, but instead will only get about $39 million this year because of a quirk in how the funding is allocated. The system is already facing $520 million in cuts to balance its budget. The loss of federal stimulus funds means that community colleges likely will have to make deep cuts in programs for low-income and disabled students.
