.Cal Animal Rights Protesters Expand Targets

Not content with picketing the homes of UC Berkeley research scientists, animal rights protesters have now apparently decided to go after anyone who provides them with the slightest infrastructural support. A new listing on indybay.org calls on people to harass officials with McCarthy Building Companies, the firm that got the contract to build the university’s new Li Ka-Shing Center for Biomedical and Health Studies. “We are calling on concerned individuals to please call and e-mail and let the individuals at McCarthy Building Companies know how you feel about their decision to make possible the torture of thousands of sentient beings,” reads the post, which also provides names and contact information for the company’s leaders. Look, we know plugging electrodes into simian brains is cruel and nasty. But scientists at the new center will conduct research into a wide of health subjects, including stem cell research, that could treat terrible neurological disorders. Do these folks really want to screw with anyone remotely connected with this project? Why not go after UPS? After all, we’re sure they’ll deliver a few reams of copy paper to the new center…copy paper that could be used to document the suffering of sentient beings!
