Ever dreamed of joining a rock band and playing onstage? If the answer is yes, and you are of the female persuasion, then get thee to Women’s Rock Camp, where a weekend of activities will culminate in your performance at a major venue in front of your cheering family and friends (no experience necessary). Originally started as a fundraiser for Bay Area Girls Rock Camp, the adult version (offered on a $300-$500 sliding scale) has grown into its own bona fide camp. Besides being super-friendly and supportive, Rock Camp’s staff and volunteers will teach you the basics of instrumentation, songwriting, and getting along, plus other band-related skills like screen-printing and dissecting images of women in media. While the whole thing may not be the most realistic — after all, being in a band takes loads of time and work, and you likely won’t have cheerleaders guiding you along the way — attending Women’s Rock Camp may give you enough of a taste of the rock ‘n’ roll dream to convince you to ditch your day job. If not, there’s always next year.
