You’ve heard the old story about Guinness tasting better when imbibed in Ireland? It’s kind of that way with Oaktown Brown. It tastes great anywhere, but it’s best downed in Oakland. Experiment by ordering one while watching an A’s game in San Francisco’s Mission district. Something will feel a bit off. This creation of the Walnut Creek-based Calicraft Brewing Company is a hearty brown ale with hints of cocoa and oak, along with that indescribable Oaktown mojo. The company’s website even describes this 6.7 percent alcohol brew as the “intersection of a cabernet and an IPA. Or, say, 19th and Broadway.” Either way, be prepared because an Oaktown Brown or two is not only going to loosen you up like an righteous Oakland resident screaming at the city council but also will induce a hankering for a thick steak or juicy burger.
