Bike East Bay

Bike East Bay, the region’s main cycling advocacy organization, has helped to make the streets throughout Alameda and Contra Costa counties safer for bicyclists — in large part by keeping close tabs on local planning processes and launching successful campaigns to create new bike lanes. But it’s the nonprofit’s free classes — for experienced cyclists and novices alike — that go a long way toward encouraging and supporting bicyclists on an individual level. All of the group’s education classes, which are funded by a wide range of public and private grants, are free and can provide participants with incredibly valuable skills for urban biking. Urban Cycling 101, for teens and adults, teaches students the rules of the road and key safety skills for avoiding crashes. The group’s one-hour theft prevention class is another option that cyclists of all skill levels can appreciate. And the Kids Bike Rodeos and Family Cycling Workshops are two courses that encourage youth biking by helping cyclists at an early age understand the many benefits of this mode of transportation. For those who missed out on childhood lessons, it’s never too late to hop on a bike — the group’s Adult Learn-to-Ride Class will get you rolling.
