Nonprofit Bananas in North Oakland is a secret that needs to be shared with all new and expecting parents. Known for its childcare referral service, it also provides a host of free workshops, like the popular “Booties Camp,” five sessions that cover topics like baby basics, baby yoga, and sleep issues. Of course it’s all baby friendly (in fact, you’re supposed to bring your baby along!), and the friendly staff will offer to hold your baby while you take a bathroom break. Bananas also has a “Choosing Infant Care” workshop that’s a good start for the clueless parent seeking childcare. Teachers go over all the different kinds of childcare situations, from daycares to cooperatives, and most importantly, answer questions. Too busy for a workshop? Download one of the many free handouts in English, Chinese, and Spanish. Workshops are mostly free, but Bananas also has a first-aid class for parents that’s $50 for one person or $70 for couples. It provides services in Vietnamese, Mien, French, Amharic, Tigrigna, and more.
