Although many companies possess transcendent, sublime, or provocative dancers, you’d be hard-pressed to find more ethereal dance programs than those presented by Axis Dance Company. Axis is composed of able and disabled dancers, so each piece addresses and meets a challenge from movement to transcend it. Even as the subject matter changes, bodies with the use of chairs, crutches, aerial choreographies, at rest, through impact, crawling, and carrying urge viewers to redefine what they consider movement, dance, and grace. Not surprisingly, many of the programs address struggle in some fashion, but only as a means to illustrate overcoming obstacles, leaping, flying. Axis inspires awe at the triumph of the human spirit over the supposed limitations of physical expression. Each performance epitomizes the indomitable spirit of humanity: No excuses, no pity, no apology. If that ain’t utopian, what is?
