On the busy stretch of Telegraph Avenue by the Fox Theater, it can be easy to overlook Diving Dog Brewhouse, one of Oakland’s newest breweries, which opened its doors last October. The storefront is fairly small, and the brewery has to compete with a lot of popular bars within a three-block radius. But you don’t want to miss Diving Dog. Inside, the brewery has thirty taps, a great selection of local craft beers, and a well-designed layout, which provides ample seating options that work well for big groups or first dates. But the feature that really makes Diving Dog standout is its Brew On Premises (BOP) classes, in which customers can brew their own beer with the business’ professional equipment. The brewery provides recipes, ingredients, and instructions — no prior experience is necessary. It makes for a great group event or party, and after a few weeks — while the beer you crafted ferments onsite in a temperature-controlled room — you can return for a bottling appointment. For novices, there’s no better way to test the waters of DIY brewing.
