There’s probably no better breakfast after a night on the town than Original Pollo in Berkeley. It’s not Bay Area froufrou, but also not Denny’s-style greasy — just real, delicious food. In the morning, the breakfast burrito is the star of the show with a choice of bacon or sausage on top of eggs and salsa and home fries. Sure, that sounds like your basic breakfast burrito, but it’s not because it tastes better than all the others. The tiny shop right off the downtown Berkeley BART station has been there for 23 years, and although it seems a little kitschy at first glance with the cabin-style wood paneling and a modest string of Christmas lights by the cash register, but the atmosphere somehow manages to be quiet without being dead, which makes it the best place in a city center to take in the morning in peace. It also serves all sorts of sandwiches and entrée plates, including gyros and kebabs, in case you’re the industrious type who manages to be on the second or third meal by mid-afternoon.
