Best Bike Shop: Patient, charitable salespeople

Missing Link Bicycle Cooperative

We’re lucky in the East Bay to have so many great bike shops. A close runner-up is Hank & Frank’s on Oakland’s College Avenue, with its friendly staff, a killer Midnight Madness sale, and free annual tune-ups if you buy your bike there. But this year’s honor goes to the Missing Link Bicycle Cooperative, a thirty-year Berkeley institution that continues to have some of the best prices anywhere and one of the most knowledgeable and experienced staff teams in the business. The clerks are extremely patient because they’re not on commission, and the co-op offers free do-it-yourself repair classes and free loaner tools so you can adjust your brakes, fix a flat, or calibrate your bicycle gears all on your own. If you’re not average height — that is, you’re tall or short — you’ll absolutely love Missing Link. It consistently sports a wide selection of smaller and larger — and reasonably priced — Trek, Marin, and Bianchi road, mountain, and hybrids.
