Berkeley Election Roundup — Bates and Arreguin

Mayor Tom Bates waltzed to an easy reelection last night, taking 62 percent of the vote compared to ex-Mayor Shirley Dean’s 35 percent. City council incumbents Darryl Moore (82%), Max Anderson (96%), and Laurie Capitelli (53%) also kept their seats. In the one council upset, council aide Jesse Arreguin, a progressive, defeated former school board member Terry Doran, a moderate, 49% to 36%, in the race to replace the late Dona Spring. Doran had far more endorsements, but Arrequin’s political bent is more in step with Spring’s. Finally, Susan Wengraf, Betty Old’s chief of staff, won her boss’ old seat with 77% of the vote.
