Alameda Mayor Beverly Johnson, who had been an outspoken supporter of a ballot initiative by developer SunCal for a massive housing project on Alameda Point, now opposes it, according to local journalist Michele Ellson. Johnson said in a press release late yesterday that although she still supports SunCal’s housing plan, she thinks the ballot initiative “will have devastating financial impacts on the city.” As the Express reported earlier this year, top city staffers also object to the initiative because they say it will short-circuit Alameda’s ability to negotiate the best deal it can with SunCal.
