Well, this is exciting. The Oakland Tribune reports that Alameda resident Benjamin Jealous has been appointed the new president of the NAACP. And he’s not just a local fella, but at age 35 he happens to be the youngest president in the history of the organization. Jealous has been a community organizer for all of his professional life, starting with the NAACP and moving on to Amnesty International; he now heads the Rosenberg Foundation. The choice of Jealous was a break from the NAACP’s tradition of appointing older, more established figures, and may reflect the group’s need to connect to younger people and revitalize its membership.
