.Alameda County to Get Its First Woman DA?

The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, long-known for being an old boy’s club, may get its first ever woman DA now that Tom Orloff has decided to retire. The Trib and the Chron report that Orloff, who has been district attorney for fifteen years, is recommending that his top deputy, Nancy O’Malley, take over for him. It’s good to hear Orloff make that recommendation, especially after a nasty sex discrimination lawsuit revealed some untoward things about his management style. Despite those revelations, Orloff was solid district attorney, although sometimes overly cautious, especially in white-collar crime cases. As for O’Malley, she is an accomplished prosecutor who specialized for years in sex abuse cases, and from all indications, would make a fine DA.
