BART Cop Activists Get Silly on D.A. Orloff

District Attorney Tom Orloff has arrested former BART police officer Johannes Mehserle and charged him with murder, in connection with his shooting of Oscar Grant on New Year’s Day. Nonetheless, activists with the Coalition Against Police Executions are still calling for his immediate ouster, and now they’re getting a little ridiculous. According to the Trib, they still think Orloff should be recalled because he actually finished investigating the case before charging Mehserle, didn’t declare Mehserle a flight risk (even though he doesn’t have the power to do so until arresting him), and had the courtroom closed during his arraignment. The Trib asks Boalt law professor Frank Zimring for his reaction, and Zimring says Orloff has been utterly professional.
