Music is a universal language, and it is important to cultivate love for sounds from all over the world. This weekend, head over to Berkeley for the fourteenth annual Berkeley World Music Festival, which opens Friday, June 9, with a free kick-off party at La Peña Cultural Center. On June 10, head over to Martin Luther King Jr. Civic Center Park to take in music from San Francisco’s Zydeco Flames band, Fito Reinoso y su Ritmo y Armonia, and tons of other musical acts. On Sunday, the festival moves to Telegraph Avenue and Haste Street, where you’ll get the chance to listen to music from the Middle East courtesy of Silk Road Caravan, and classical Chinese music led by guzheng soloist Winnie Wong. Djialy Kunda Kouyate will bring West African sounds and dances. Let’s celebrate what makes the Bay Area so unique: the fusion of music from all over the world.
Saturday June 10 and Sunday June 11, noon, MLK Jr. Civic Center Park, BerkeleyWorldMusic.org.
