.You Write Too Long — This Week’s Cover Story Bite-Sized

This week, “Are Bees Too Busy?”: Like their human masters and most of their counterparts in the animal kingdom, honeybees are suffering from overwork stress these days. We can hear you saying, So what? But really, the little critters are vitally necessary. Without their pollination efforts, there would be no almonds, grapes, plums, cucumbers, cantaloupe, asparagus, apples, cherries, tomatoes, zucchini, etc. You can leave off the zucchini, but we’d certainly miss most of the above if suddenly the bees went on strike. Wouldn’t you know it, commercial beekeepers are treating them just like chickens and cattle: overcrowding, junk food diets, and other agri-business shortcuts. And now bees are experiencing Colony Collapse Disorder, of all things. Writer Susan Kuchinskas catches the buzz on the latest ecological horror story.
