When UC Berkeley rehired its police chief immediately after she retired, the story infuriated lawmakers and members of the general public. After all, top cop Victoria Harrison got her $2.1 million retirement package up front, got another payment of $552,000 over ten years, and was rehired with a six-figure salary. Now, embarrassed members of the UC Regents plan to clarify rules about when and how retired employees can go back on the job, in order to satisfy a public already inflamed by university compensation scandals. Under the new rules, retired employees could only come back for a year, and must work part-time. Of course, it’s too late to do anything about Victoria Harrison’s deal.
