On the Trail

3/20-3/21

Springtime on the bayshore is a good opportunity for kids to discover nature. The Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center has it down to a science — literally. This Saturday afternoon (1:30-2:30 p.m.), youngsters can learn how to identify birds and animals by looking for their tracks, then casting the tracks in plaster to take home. Then on Sunday (2-3:30 p.m.), the “For Goodness Snakes” class introduces kids ten and older to snake lore and reptile study, including the construction of a craft snake followed by a real snake hunt. Better than Nikes

Read to Achieve, say Warriors stars

If Allen Iverson can persuade tens of thousands of sprouts to buy a pair of pimped-out sneakers for upwards of a hundred dollars a pop, then surely Jason Richardson, a star player for our own Golden State Warriors, can convince that same impressionable lot to pick up a book. With his best game face on and a stack of favorite stories, Jason, along with teammate Brian Cardinal and Warrior mascot Thunder, are prepared to dazzle your kids off the court at the San Leandro Library on Tuesday, March 23, at 7:30 p.m. Read to Achieve is a child literacy program devoted to turning out a future community that would just as likely pick up a good book as run to the mall for the latest Nikes. Which makes good sense, unless of course your kid can bob, weave, and take it to the hoop like A.I. or slam-dunk like Richardson — in which case we suggest a finishing school or a good lawyer. 300 Estudillo Ave. This is a free event. Artistic Antioch

The Rivertown Art Center is dedicated to fostering the arts and providing cultural opportunities in Antioch, and there’s no such thing as starting too early. Take Saturday’s Kids’ Art Day, a showcase for young artists and a fun way to become part of the creative process. The afternoon event (1 to 5 p.m.) offers children plenty to do: hands-on art activities, face painting, games, and prizes. All materials will be provided, and admission is free for kids and their families. The Art Day is a program of the nonprofit Arts & Cultural Foundation of Antioch, and takes place at the center, 640 West 2nd St. in downtown Antioch.
