The Oakland restaurateur Charlie Hallowell’s bimonthly philanthropic Sunday Suppers series continues this week with two seatings at Penrose (3311 Grand Ave., Oakland), Hallowell’s North African-inspired California cuisine restaurant. As always, the meal — priced on a sliding scale starting at $60 a person — will feature multiple courses, including a little-gem salad; ricotta served with asparagus, farro, and kumquats; and braised lamb with flatbreads and chickpea ragu. Proceeds from this week’s Sunday Supper will go toward supporting Beats, Rhymes & Life, an Oakland-based community organization that uses an innovative “hip hop therapy” model in its work with troubled teens.
The East Bay’s alt weekly. Published since 1978 on the east shores of the San Francisco Bay Area, the Express features original local news reporting and coverage of events, music, arts and restaurants in Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda and other parts of the vibrant East Bay, a cultural epicenter of Northern California.
