We may no longer live in a sports age that considers horse racing metaphors part of the lingua franca. Which is too bad considering people call the long campaign for President a “horse race”. We still talk of “handicaps”, “long shots” and “finish lines” but think of how much richer our dialogue would be if we could squeeze in “the chalk”, “a boat race” or “an underlay”…even the double entendres would be great.
