A Short Road Trip to a Journey Back in Time

Break out of your Oakland/Berkeley bubble and take a twelve-minute road trip to Point Richmond’s “Old Town.” The Up & Under Pub and Grill (2 West Richmond Ave., 510-778-1313, TheUpandUnder.com) is a warm and friendly family pub, serving up lunch and dinner with a full bar. Sandwiches are named after Rugby positions: Try the “The Full Back” (grilled chicken with thick-cut bacon) or “The Winger” (grilled Portobello mushroom and cactus). Or split “The Scrum Half” with your friends (a large plate of crispy beer-battered fish and chips.)

Nathan Trivers just opened for business last month (his card says he’s the Owner/Janitor). He started his Rugby career in high school in Sacramento before traveling the world, playing on teams in Australia, Ireland, and Wales for what he describes as “beer money.” Why did he end up in opening a pub in Richmond? “The site chose me,” Trivers said, explaining that his landlord is a rugby player, too.

View tiny trains for historically affordable prices at the Golden State Model Railroad Museum (900-A Dornan Dr., 510-234-4884, GSMRM.org). To get there you travel through the Ferry Point tunnel just across the street from the Up & Under, and then emerge on the other side at the East Bay’s hidden waterfront gem, the picturesque Miller/Knox Regional Shoreline Park. The museum re-opens for the season in April.

The Point also hosts live stage entertainment at Masquers Playhouse (105 Park Pl., 510-232-3888, Masquers.org), a volunteer-run community theater now showing an original play about frenemies who find themselves paired as dueling cooking-show hosts. Wanna-bes take note: Auditions for their summer season are coming up next month.

Don’t miss: Fine dining and drinks in a classic, old-school setting at the Hotel Mac Bar & Restaurant (50 Washington Ave., 510-233-0576). … Point Richmond locals pack Little Louie’s Deli and Cafe (49 Washington Ave., 510-235-3108, LittleLouies.com) for breakfast and lunch. … Call ahead before visiting Guillermina Oriental Arts and Antiques (111 West Richmond Ave., 510-237-0036, Guillermina.com) for elegant furniture and Japanese prints, among other curios.
