.Oakland Tribune Endorsements

The Oakland Tribune has published a collection of its endorsements in the November election, which gives us a good opportunity to sum up where the paper stands. All the people who will already win the state Senate and Assembly races should win, sez the Trib; we wonder why they bothered writing the piece. The editors really hate Prop. 1A, the big bullet train bond, but they like bonds when they fund children’s hospitals, so they say yes on Prop. 2. They rightly reject Props. 5, 6, and 9, the measures that would reduce penalties for drug crimes, on the grounds that the voters don’t have the education or background to make complex decisions on sentencing or the administration or criminal justice; we fully agree and hate it when politicos try to get the voter to do the state legislature’s job for them. The paper says no to the renewable energy mandate in Prop. 7, as well as Prop. 10’s rebate for people who buy energy efficient cars. They like the redistricting Prop. 11 and the Prop. 12 bond to finance low-income housing for vets. Finally, they reject Prop. 8, the attempt to strip marriage rights from homosexuals.
