New Catholic Cathedral Opens at Last

The Oakland Tribune‘s Sean Maher has a nice piece about yesterday’s ceremony to open the new cathedral for the East Bay’s Catholic diocese. The ceremony began with a march from the spot where the old cathedral was rendered uninhabitable by the Loma Prieta earthquake; congregants march from San Pablo Avenue to Lake Merritt, shaking their maracas and whatnot. At the new baptismal, church leaders poured holy water collected from their various parishes into the font. Maher does a nice job illustrating the striking diversity of the diocese, pointing out the parishoners from Brazil to Vietnam and beyond.
