Local Licks

This week we review Jason Bodlovich Group, 1-O.A.K., The Glorious First of June, and Mads Tolling Quartet.

Jason Bodlovich Group, Moby Ahab

You gotta hand it to Jason Bodlovich: Even though his music could serve as the extradiegetic soundtrack for a romantic comedy that takes place in a diner, the guitarist deserves credit for knowing enough about compositional structure to write eleven breezy rock tunes. Bodlovich is a decent improviser and he gets to flex on “Ode to Joe.” (Moby Ahab Productions)

1-O.A.K., Special Request

Local crooner and technically proficient gulper 1-O.A.K. has successfully married all the clichés of contemporary hip-hop and R&B: breezy smooth-jazz chords; digital beats, expressions of affection tempered with masculine posturing; a pinched, boyish tenor. And, on-the-cheap production aside, it’s an immediately catchy album. With a little vocal coaching (or assistance from Auto-Tune), he’ll be magnificent. (Honor Roll Crew)

The Glorious First of June, Demos for the World

Guitarist Richard Shirk grouses about being in “a lonely niche” — i.e., the intersection of sensitive-guy poetry and extremely palatable acoustic folk music — but in reality, loneliness might be salutary for his art. Take a song like “You’ll Never Find Me”: You’ll never find me/You’ll never take me alive. Such declarations could only originate from one who stands apart from the crowd. (self-released)

At Hotel Utah (500 4th St., San Francisco) on Friday, Apr. 27. 9 p.m., $8, $10

Mads Tolling Quartet, Celebrating Jean-Luc Ponty Live at Yoshi’s

Violin jazz may be an acquired taste, but there’s little debate that Mads Tolling is one of the best young technicians in the genre, not to mention one of the most dynamic improvisers. (“Dynamic” meaning both “nimble” and “capable of using sound volume to create texture.”) Here, the Copenhagen-raised violinist pays tribute to his idol, Jean-Luc Ponty, with a fabulously polished quartet. (Madsman Records)

At Yoshi’s (1300 Fillmore St., San Francisco) on Monday, May 21. 8 p.m., $14
