Fox Theater Reopens with Grand Party

Less than a month after riots gripped downtown Oakland, city leaders threw a well-deserved bash to celebrate the reopening of the Fox Theater. One of the greatest Art Deco theaters on the West Coast, the Fox was almost demolished in the 1970s to make way for a parking lot. It then languished in disrepair for decades, until developer Phil Tagami pulled together a team to restore it with the help of the city, which owns the theater. Last night, Oakland’s luminaries toasted the theater’s reopening with a massive ball that lasted into the night. Now, sez the Trib, Tagami will lead an effort to raise $5 million in order to guarantee that the Fox will never again come so close to demolition.
