The Chronicle‘s Matthew Yi has a truly excellent story out about how the state budget crisis will actually hurt the most conservative legislative districts in California. As is the case in the rest of the country, the state’s most right-wing and anti-tax regions actually pay the least amount of taxes and depend on government services the most. Take Modoc County, for example; Yi points out that the average resident pays $768 in taxes, but receives $2,216 in government services. Marin County, meanwhile, pays $4,793 in taxes per capita, but receives just $606 per capita in services. If state Republicans continue to obstruct any tax increase and doom California to insolvency, everyone will suffer. But their own voters will suffer the most.
