The days of rods ‘n’ ratfinks, George Barris and Big Daddy Roth, chopped and channeled deuce coupes and bucket Ts, and the nickel bottle of Coke may be over, but the memory lingers on at the Goodguys/Texaco Havoline West Coast Nationals — Friday through Saturday at the Alameda County Fairground in Pleasanton (4501 Pleasanton Ave., take the Bernal exit off 680). It’s billed as the West’s largest display of hot rods, custom cars, and classics — 3,500 cars, nothing later than 1954 — but the hype is strictly 21st-century. Check out the five forty-foot Monster Rods, meet Andy “The Rodfather” Brizio, gawk at “America’s Most Beautiful Street Rod,” dig the swap meet and vendors, fool around with the toy car exhibit (including a vintage Cushman scooter), and reflect on the Golden Age of unlimited gasoline at fifty cents a gallon, fully leaded. Got the day off Monday? Want to come out and take your hacks on the golf course to benefit Cal State East Bay intercollegiate athletics? The ninth annual Cal State East Bay Golf Tourney at Oakland’s Sequoyah Country Club (4550 Heafey Rd.) begins with a 10 a.m. registration, then a poolside lunch, and finally a shotgun start at noon for eighteen holes of golf, followed by a dinner buffet, awards, etc. Prizes will be awarded for winning foursomes, longest drive, and ball closest to pin on certain holes. The Next Tiger Woods?
Golfers as young as seven can sharpen their game and compete with other kids at today’s (Wednesday) Mutual of Omaha Drive Chip & Putt Junior Challenge at San Leandro’s Monarch Bay Golf Club. The heavily sponsored traveling event for 250 competitors (in groupings for seven to eight, nine to ten, eleven to twelve, and thirteen to fourteen), selected after registering at TheGolfChannel.com, involves contests for driving (distance and accuracy), chipping (three balls into a target zone), and putting (one ball five feet from the hole, the other fifteen).
