.Faxploitation: Bread Maybe a Little Too Superfortified

Safeway has just issued a recall of more than a dozen types of bread manufactured by the Pleasanton-based company based on concerns that they may contain “wire fragments from production machinery.” That’s one heck of a way to get your daily dose of iron and other essential heavy metals. So far, no one has been injured, but the company is urging customers to return loaves with “best before” dates up to and including March 17. Safeway Recalls Bread in Parts of California and Nevada

PLEASANTON, Calif., – March 9, 2007 – Safeway Inc. today announced it is voluntarily recalling several of its private label bread products sold at Safeway and Pak ‘n Save stores in Northern California and Northwest Nevada. The products may contain wire fragments from production machinery. The recall does not affect products sold at the Company’s Vons or Pavilions stores in Southern California.

The recall affects the following products with “Best Before” dates up to and including March 17, 2007. (Example: Mar 17)

The “Best Before” date can be found on the plastic closure used to close the bread bag. The UPC number can be found on the bottom panel of bread bag. Customers who purchased these products in Northern California or Northwest Nevada can return the bread to their local store for a full refund.

While Safeway has received customer complaints, no injuries have been reported. The production machinery in question has been repaired and the production line cleaned. Safeway values its customers and apologizes for any inconvenience this may have caused.
