.Election 2006: More Mudslinging in Oakland District 2 Race

The Trib reports that the San Francisco-based “Oaklanders for New Leadership” has now spent $54,000 on behalf of city council candidate Aimee Allison. “Overall,” Heather MacDonald writes, “independent groups have spent more than $70,400 to support Allison’s campaign, after she vehemently denounced plans by the Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce to support her opponent’s campaign, opening her up to charges of hypocrisy.” Meanwhile, incumbent Pat Kernighan went negative, accusing Allison, a Green Party member, among other things, of driving an SUV. Steve Phillips, the San Francisco attorney behind Oaklanders for New Leadership, told the Express that he planned to “counter-balance” whatever the Oakland Chamber of Commerce’s committee, OakPAC, spent on behalf of Kernighan. Well, OakPAC only spent about $26,000-so Phillips’ group has more than doubled the Chamber’s investment.

OakPAC heavies considered spending more for Kernighan late last week when Phillips’ committee appeared poised to outspend them. But OakPAC flack Scott Peterson says the group has chosen to abide by its agreement with Mayor-elect Ron Dellums.

As anyone interested enough in this race to have followed me to the jump knows, OakPAC successfully sued the city in federal court to suspend campaign spending restrictions on soft-money committees. Dellums said this unfairly changed the rules at the last minute, and persuaded the Chamber to lay off its plans to spend at least $58,000 on Kernighan’s behalf.
