The San Francisco police have tentatively concluded that Daniel Kliman, an East Bay doctor and Zionist activist, died when he accidentally walked into an open elevator shaft a few days ago. Considering his involvement in the wacky, tribalist world of the Israeli-Palestine conflict, many supporters have suggested Kliman may have had help getting in the elevator shaft, if you know what we’re saying. We don’t want to get into that, since we don’t know one way or another, and this particular brand of conspiracy theory makes us queasy. But what a character this guy was! According to the Chron, Kliman lived alone in Oakland, was a doctor in internal medicine and a dedicated vegetarian, and was filled with a booming kind of internal energy. He was also gay and a dedicated Critical Mass rider and bike activist, in addition to founding the group S.F. Voice for Israel. A gay, Critical Mass-biking Israel activist? With a medical degree? And a “passionate vegetarian” who ate with the group “Vegi-Jews”? There was too much life there to be lost in a momentary slip near an elevator shaft. Tsk, for shame.
