Yesterday, the Chronicle reported that police interviewed an apparent girlfriend of Your Black Muslim Bakery leader Yusuf Bey IV shortly after the murder of Chauncey Bailey last year. The woman, whose name was not released, told police that Bey chortled about Bailey’s killing after watching a TV news report three hours after the incident, saying, “That will teach ’em to fuck with me.” But what’s even more disturbing is that the interview was almost lost, appearing not in the Bailey file but a different police file. Apparently, the district attorney’s office only learned about the interview two months ago. Derwin Longmire, the homicide sergeant who handled the Bailey case, has been the subject of increasing criticism for his close friendship with bakery leaders and alleged interference in a variety of police investigations into the family.
