On the one hand, as the San Francisco Chronicle reports, Chevron has announced it will donate $2 million to help Burmese villagers struggling to survive after last week’s deadly cyclone. On the other hand, the company’s generosity only serves to remind us that Chevron is part owner of a massive natural gas pipeline in the country’s hinterland, even though the US of A forbids most company’s from doing buisness there. Chevron officials have always denied reports that the Burmese military terrorizes and persecutes villagers near the pipeline, but hey, it’s Burma. No one believes the soldiers are there to hand out Snickers bars. By the way, props to the Chron for sticking with the original name of the country, instead of legitimizing the ruthless junta that has enslaved it by adopting the new moniker, which shall go unmentioned here.
