Home improvement reached a new level of frenzy, while the less fortunate swapped services or fluids to get by. And with “homeland security” the new watchword, there were new opportunities to narc on your neighbor and a boom in all things defense-related. In entertainment, dating became the Web’s new “killer app,” and reality TV was more ubiquitous but less real.
