There's something about Mary

SUN 3/28

Has it been eons since you’ve experienced a stress-free (kid-free) evening out? Well, you don’t have to wait for the planets to align to get a little groove on. It’s a well-known fact that taking a break from the treadmill once in a while, whether from parenting or work, is powerfully restorative. Nobody knows this better than the Parental Stress Services of Alameda County, and luckily for us they have connections. To kick off Child Abuse Prevention Month (April) and to play catch-up with the budget, Administrative Program Supervisor Shay Black called on a legendary folk singer — his sister, Mary Black — for an evening of soothing Irish music that will not be repeated in the Bay Area this year. Now at the end of a world tour, she has earned her position as an international star with more than two decades of innovative songwriting and a distinctly moving voice coveted by her homeland and loved and around the globe. On Sunday, she brings it all together for one night at the historical Paramount Theatre in Oakland with opener and local favorite Ledisi, starting at 6:30 sharp. For prices, tickets, or more info call 510-625-8497 or go to the box office at 2025 Broadway. ParamountTheatre.com — Justine Nicole

As Hard

Say g’bye to yer kite

Of all the labels tossed around music journalism these days, “post-hardcore” has got to be the dumbest. We all know what happens after you’re hardcore — you get softcore, or you die of some kind of internal injury. Make it “just-as-hardcore,” and the moniker, like most labels, applies, if not to the music then at least to the ethos of Kite-Eating Tree. The band has avoided its home scene, touring around Los Angeles instead of in it. It has turned down independent label deals, saying they read too much like corporate contracts. But, despite its cuddly-wuddly name, the band plays what we used to call back in Florida “rawk,” mining the ’90s for the razor-wire guitar of Seaweed and Jawbox, coming up for air in the 21st century like a more literate No Knife. Kite-Eating Tree performs with Paint Out the Light and Fevered Pitch, Tuesday night at the Stork Club, 2330 Telegraph Ave., Oakland. 510-444-6174. — Stefanie Kalem

A Shithead in both counties

One of Vancouver’s punk rock favorite sons (and occasional Green Party candidate), Joey “Shithead” Keithley, serenades the East Bay twice this Saturday. First, he’ll be performing solo at 6:30 p.m. at AK Press (674A 23rd St., Oakland) to celebrate the US release of his memoir I, Shithead: A Life in Punk (Arsenal Punk Press). Then he’ll show you what gives him the right by performing the 25-years-young tunes of his band, DOA, at Bourbon Street Bar & Grill (2765 Clayton Rd., Concord), at a 21-and-up show with 2nd Class Citizens. The AK Press event costs $5; the show in Concord, $15. AK Press: 510-208-1700; Bourbon St.: 925-676-7272. — Stefanie Kalem
