Best Way to Crash the Party

Encinal High School Football

Just like high school itself, the East Bay high-school football world
is divided into subcultures and cliques. In sports they call them
leagues, but we all know better. The Alameda Contra Costa Athletic
League (ACCAL) are the cool kids: Berkeley High, Pinole Valley,
Alameda. These are big kids with big programs getting big ink. Up until
this season, Encinal High School of Alameda was sort of the runt of the
group, accustomed to wearing a “Kick Me” sign. But this year the Jets
split to the Bay Shore Athletic League (BSAL) and hooked up with
schools their own size: St. Mary’s, Piedmont, and Albany. And they did
the kicking. The Jets ran the table, going an East Bay best 13-0,
including two sweet beatdowns of their former ACCAL tormentors.
Jonathan Brown, the Contra Costa Times East Bay Player of the
Year, did it all for the Jets, from throwing touchdown passes to
sacking quarterbacks to leading a walkout to save sports on the island.
Not bad at all for the new kids.
