Cal Football

College football is all about tradition:bonfires, pep rallies, and, if
your head coach is Jeff Tedford, a crazy kind of fashion show. When
Tedford took command in 2002, he started by building a winning team and
continued by outfitting it fabulously, much as he did at the University
of Oregon years before. Blue, gold, and white may not sound like much
to begin working with, but after decades of the same ol’ same ol’, Cal
is now fashion-forward. Any given Saturday will find the Golden Bears
in anything from solid gold to a uniform front with a bear claw motif.
Somebody calculated nine different jersey combos last season, which is
not bad considering that the football team only suits up a dozen times
in a season. Fans who can’t wait to see what 2009 will bring are
advised to buy a video game and begin playing the season ahead. Those
of us who can wait until September 5 can watch the Bears battle the
University of Maryland in Strawberry Canyon, and it will certainly be a
colorful debut.
