Best Untapped, Warehouse-Size Thrift Store

Thrift Town

The “town” in Thrift Town’s name is an appropriate moniker for El
Sobrante’s bustling secondhand store, as the space is populated with
enough used goods to equip a small village. Granted, at times the
“town” can feel more like a zoo — with kids climbing clothing
racks and carts crowding the aisles — but with the store’s
copious amount of clothing, kitchenware, jewelry, knickknacks,
furniture, and electronics, it’s a pretty good bet you’ll walk away
with at least one good find. Besides, the chaotic atmosphere lends to
its charm — used treasures shouldn’t come too easy. And because
the East Bay store — one of seven California locations in the
Thrift Town chain — is tucked away in El Sobrante, where it’s
slightly out of reach of BART-hopping thrifters, there’s a good chance
the racks won’t be entirely ransacked by the time you reach them. Fans
of flannel, jean jackets, granny sweaters, and other gaudy goods would
be wise to circumvent pricey vintage stores and hit Thrift Town’s racks
for a good selection of affordable fashions, often in the $2 to $3
range. (And don’t be surprised if you bump into a local vintage-shop
owner buying merchandise for markup). Each week a different color of
sales tag is featured, and items tagged accordingly are 50 percent off.
