Best Smoker-Friendly Bar

George Kaye's

Enter dutch doors to this tiny, dimly lit dive, which some regulars
affectionately call “Geo Kaye’s” (since the “rge” was dropped from the
neon sign who know’s when). Although it’s not as heavy on the
carcinogens as it was before the more restrictive smoking laws for
independently owned bars went into effect, don’t expect to leave Kaye’s
clear-lunged. The barkeeps will not mind your lighting up. There’s
cheap beer (as cheap as $2.50 for a glass of Pabst from the tap) served
in tumblers and a decent jukebox of punk, old country, and local jams
to go with your American Spirit Blues. It’s said to be a hipster bar
and an anti-hipster bar. In fact, this spot is a favorite for tatted-up
Temescal mustache types and middle-aged Mr. Cleavers alike, and the tie
that binds is nicotine. The more righteous-living patrons aren’t the
only ones sucking in secondhand smoke — there’s rarely a night at
Kaye’s without a dog (or two) in evidence. Smoking and dogs with not a
crantini in sight — you don’t get much of that in San Francisco.
