Strap on your dancing shoes, it’s time to go back to the 1920s. If you’ve ever wanted to bust out some moves to your favorite jazz songs but lacked the know-how, the folks at The Breakaway have you covered. A group of UC Berkeley alumni who first developed a taste for swing dancing on campus founded the dance school (located in the Veterans Memorial Building), looking to carve out a space in Oakland for the joyful community they’d found. The Breakaway offers dance lessons every Tuesday, with a monthly class series designed to gradually develop your skills from amateur to dancing machine. What makes these classes so appealing is how inclusive they are. No partner? Come alone, everyone rotates partners anyway. Don’t have the funds? Every third Friday of the month they host an open practice, which is free for beginning students and $4 for everyone else. Plus, they host a live band night every month. Don’t be shy — give the lindy hop a try.
